Jontae Lamont Proctor, 21, of Leonardtown, was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault for fatally shooting a 23-year-old man in Lexington Park last year, according to the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Proctor’s latest conviction comes as part of an escalating string of violent crimes.
On Feb. 26, 2024, deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office responded to gunfire in Lexington Park and found a man inside a vehicle, unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
The victim later died from his injuries, officials said.
After a four-day trial, a jury found Proctor guilty of the murder. But prosecutors say his violent streak didn’t stop there. Just one month before his murder trial, Proctor was convicted in a separate shooting case.
On March 13, 2024, prosecutors say he fired shots into a residence in Lexington Park, leading to a jury convicting him of first-degree assault and using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime.
“(Proctor) has repeatedly exhibited a blatant disregard for human life and the safety of our community,” St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney Jaymi Sterling said. “These convictions ensure that (he) will no longer be able to terrorize our neighborhoods.”
Proctor remains held without bond while he awaits sentencing. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison for the murder conviction and up to 70 years for the previous shooting case, officials said.
